Ikhlas (sincerity) is about ensuring our actions are performed truly for the sake of Allah without any ulterior motive such as seeking worldly pleasures or recognition from others. Allah reminds us: “Indeed, We have sent down the Book to you O Prophet in truth, so worship Allah alone, being sincerely devoted to Him.” [Surah Az-Zumar 39:2]
It is often very easy to show the world you are a "practicing Muslim" who carries out good deeds for the sake of Allah, but deep down only we know what our intentions really are.
One of the hardest tests for us is to do good in this world without getting carried away when the masses start praising us, especially in times of social media where it is easy to become obsessed by metrics such as likes, followers and views. We must constantly renew and evaluate our intentions. The prophet (ﷺ; peace be upon him) said: “Indeed, deeds are but by intentions. Every man will be rewarded only for what he intended.” [Bukhari]
Furthermore, when taking an action sincerely for the sake of Allah, a believer will not only be comforted knowing they will be rewarded by their Lord, but they will also see the help of Allah manifest itself in various ways across their life one way or another.
As Muslims, sincerity is not something that we should aspire to have in our worship alone, but in all aspects of our lives. This could be our employment, business dealings, relations with others and many others things. We need to ensure our intentions are in the right place and we are truthful at all times without having any hidden agendas.
Ultimately, sincerity in our worship as well our life in general is essential for getting closer to Allah (SWT) so that we can lead a righteous life and attain true success. May Allah enable us all attain and strengthen our sincerity in all aspects of our life, Ameen.
"The one who is sincere to his Lord is like a person who walks on sand. You don’t hear his footsteps but you can see his traces."
Ibn Mas’ud(RadiAllahu’anhu; may Allah be pleased with him)
