Implementing Islam In The Household

“Believers, guard yourselves and your kindred from a Fire…” [Surah Al-Tahrim 66:6]

Implementing Islam into our households and daily lives is important as it is a means to safeguard our families. Here are some simple actionable tips:

Create an Islamic environment at home:

o Recite Qur’an regularly or at the very least play the recitation out aloud.

o Reflect and discuss Qur’an and Hadith together as a family, even if it is for 10 minutes a day.

o Pray in congregation together where possible.

o Show love and compassion towards family members as well as neighbours.

Deal with children in a prophetic manner:

o Have regular conversations with your children so that you build a relationship where they are confident to have open discussions rather than hide things from you – a simple way to do this is to ensure you regularly eat together.

o When telling your children not to do something, don’t just forbid them but explain to them why they shouldn’t do it.

o Express your love to your children by hugging them and reminding them you love them – the Prophet (ﷺ; peace be upon him) was always loving towards his wives and children and he never oppressed them.

Lead by example:

o “Every one of you is a shepherd and is responsible for his flock. The leader of people is a guardian and is responsible for his subjects. A man is the guardian of his family and he is responsible for them. A woman is the guardian of her husband’s home and his children and she is responsible for them. The servant of a man is a guardian of the property of his master and he is responsible for it. No doubt, every one of you is a shepherd and is responsible for his flock.” [Muslim & Bukhari]

o Before we change others we must constantly work on ourselves and lead by example. It is important our actions embody the etiquettes of Islam so that they are clearly reflected in our character.
