“And one of His signs is that He created for you spouses from among yourselves so that you may find comfort in them. And He has placed between you compassion and mercy. Surely in this are signs for the people who reflect” [Surah Ar-Rum 30:21]
Allah (subhanahu wa ta'ala; May He be glorified and exalted) reminds us that marriage is about love, comfort, and happiness as well as compassion and mercy. Furthermore, marriage itself is a sign for the believer.
For those who are currently seeking a potential spouse, a good advice is to work on this precious moment on developing yourself further in terms of Islam as well as your character and work on making yourself the best possible person you can for your future spouse.
For those who are married, here are some simple tips to grow love between you and your spouse and keep the Shaytaan away:
1. Carry out good deeds together. From studying Islam together to working on charity initiatives for the needy, or even more locally for your community. Also, make it a habit to pray in congregation together as regularly as possible.
2. Focus on the good your spouse does for you. Sometimes many of us are quick to pick out flaws and compare our spouses to others, whether it is through something we heard or saw on social media. However, these things we hear or see are often just one side of the story. We should do more to reflect on the good moments. Nobody is perfect and everyone has flaws, but constantly working on developing together and getting closer to Allah is something we should all strive for.
3. Regularly buy gifts for each other. Islam encourages the giving of gifts, as in the hadith of Abu Hurairah (radiAllahu ‘anhu; may Allah be pleased with him), according to which the Prophet (ﷺ; peace be upon him) said: “Exchange gifts; you will love one another.” [Bukhari]
Finally, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ; peace be upon him) said: ”The best of you are those who are best to their wives” [Tirmidhi]. May Allah (subhanahu wa ta'ala; May He be glorified and exalted) bless our marriages and make them a means to get closer to Him. May Allah (‘azza wa jal; The Possessor of Complete Glory and Majesty) make it easy for those who are seeking a spouse and bless them with a marriage full of love and compassion.
"A man once came to Hasan al-Basri (rahimahullah; may Allah have mercy on him) and said ‘I have a daughter who has received proposals, whom should I marry her to?’ He replied: ”Marry her to the one who fears Allah Ta’ala, for if he loves her he will honour her and if he dislikes her, he will not oppress her."
