“The best of fasting after Ramadan is fasting Allah's month of Muharram.” [Muslim]
Ibn 'Abbas (radiAllahu ‘anhu; may Allah be pleased with him) said, “The Prophet ﷺ came to Madinah and saw the Jews fasting on the day of 'Ashura'. He said, 'What is this?' They said, 'This is a righteous day, it is the day when Allah saved the Children of Israel from their enemies, so Musa fasted on this day.' He said, 'We have more right to Musa than you,' so he fasted on that day and commanded [the Muslims] to fast on that day.” [Bukhari]
The day of Ashura falls on 10th Muharram. The 10th day of Muharram (Ashura) will be on Monday 8th August 2022 inshaAllah.
Ibn 'Abbas (radiAllahu ‘anhu; may Allah be pleased with him) said, “I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ so keen to fast any day and give it priority over any other than this day, the day of Ashura, and this month, meaning Ramadhan.” [Bukhari]
The Prophet (ﷺ; peace be upon him) said, “For fasting the day of Ashura, I hope that Allah will accept it as expiation for the year that went before.” [Muslim]
The Prophet (ﷺ; peace be upon him) said, “If I live to see the next year, in sha Allah, we will fast on the ninth day too.” [Muslim]
Fasting the 9th of Muharram (with 10th) is highly recommended by the Sunnah. Imam At-Tirmidhi reported that Ibn `Abbas (radiAllahu ‘anhu; may Allah be pleased with him) used to say, “We should fast on two days: the 9th and 10th of Muharram to distinguish ourselves from the Jewish community.” [Tirmidhi]
We should take advantage of this concession of Allah (subhanahu wa ta'ala; May He be glorified and exalted) and ensure that we fast these two days in order to have our minor sins forgiven. It should be noted that according to the majority scholarly opinion, the 10th and the 11th can also be fasted to fulfil the recommended Sunnah.
If you are not able to fast 9th and 10th then you can also take the option to fast 10th and 11th day but the 9th and 10th is preferred.
